A month ago I was asked if I would be interested in designing and painting a mural for Hayeswood Primary School. The aim was to brighten up their reception/entrance area with a child friendly theme relating to their school emblem- an oak tree adorned with various woodland animals. Initially I was very nervous and doubtful as to whether I could undertake this project. I had never painted animals before, especially in acrylic paint (a material that I previously disliked and hardly ever used), and on a wall too! However it was also a very exciting and thrilling idea, to make my mark upon a space that children would hopefully grow up and remember fondly in years to come. I therefore looked upon this project as a challenge to test my skills and capabilities as an artist, and to test what I was made of.
This project was completed in the space of two weeks (in between working part-time) and I feel pleased with the final outcome. It has made me realise that I should challenge myself more because that way I can learn more about myself and what I can achieve. I can use a wider range of materials and paint all sorts of different things. After this project I have learned not to doubt myself before even trying, this way I can achieve things that I never thought myself capable of. Ultimately the most joyful thing about this project has been seeing the reactions of other people. To create a piece of artwork that makes people smile is the most rewarding and meaningful thing that I will ever do.
